Hello. I have an LG T.V. which I got in Jan. 2008.
I am one of those OTA-viewers.... no-dish, no-cable. Using an antenna I get really good reception of about 10 local channels. But I really miss being able to record shows for my husband who works weird hours and misses primetime viewing.
I just read the topic "Help; need a digital version of my VHS VCR; is there such a thing?" I followed the info to a point, but my tech. skills are begginer level and I got overwhelmed.
Also, I can't afford to pay for any monthly services.
Maybe this is an ignorant question, but I was wondering, can I record a show off of my pc onto a DVD (I have Windows XP Home Edition OS for my pc with a Pioneer DVD/CD Recorder installed), and then take that DVD into my living room, put it into a cheap DVD player and watch it on my T.V.?
If so, is there a special kind of DVD disc I would need... also, would any old DVD player work to play it back? (what about HD)

Yes, you could do this, but if you can't afford basic services, then the cost of DVDs for any period of time might not be the better choice. I would suggest you get a dvd player that hasd a usb port. Then you can copy the files onto a usb flash drive and watch them that way.

Something like this one would work great:

To do the actual recording you would need a tuner card. You can buy one new for around $80. You would need one that has a digital OTA tuner like the hvr1600. You can also find them used. Finally you would need some pvr software like GBPVR to handle all the recordings for you.

A popular alternative is a DVD Recorder with a ATSC Tuner. You can find some with Hard Drives as well for extra storage so that you don't always have to burn it to a disc. It might even be possible to replace the Hard drive in these things with much bigger hard drives so you would never have to burn to a disc. However, I've never owned one so I don't really know for certain if you can watch a show off the hard drive. I'd imagine you could, but that needs to be verified, so you don't go buy one and find you can't watch a recorded show off the Hard drive.
