I want to build a PVR from scratch, for as cheap as possible. The main function for my PVR is to record TV shows. I won't be watching the recordings back on this PVR, I have another device that I will transfer my recordings to. The only thing besides recording that I will be using my PVR for is to edit commercials out of my recordings.

I am buying WinTV-HVR-2250 Dual Tuner, and that is the only thing that I am sure of at this point.

I want to spend as little as possible to build this. I would like to have one extra PCIe x1 slot (in case I buy another TV tuner in the future) if possible.

I don't care how ugly the case is.

Can anyone help suggest parts? And cheap/free pvr & editing software?

Thanks!

You can find some really good deals on cases on newegg and I would suggest going with a 780G or above motherboard so that you don't have to invest in a discrete video card. Really in this particular case you biggest expense is probably going to be hard drives. Since you're not really planning on playing back much on the actual device but you are going to be doing recording you do want to have plenty of space. As far as free pvr software is concerned GBPVR is great. I have been using that for a couple years now. It's very stable and very well supported. As far as editing software is concerned someone else may need to help you with that. I use video redo for that. I really think it's great but it's not free.

Dude: It's a complicated case, Maude. Lotta ins, lotta outs, lotta what have yous. Fortunately I've been adhering to a pretty strict, uh, drug regimen to keep my mind, you know, limber.
