I have a Sony XBR with an ethernet connection.  I want to hook it up wirelessly to my Netgear wireless N router.  What do I need.  A guy at Fry's tried to seel me a pricey ethernet bridge but I was told at the video store I just needed an inexpensive wireless gaming adapter.

I think the Fry's guy is right, but if you're buying it local you might as well try the wireless game adapter first and see if it works. The problem is most of the gaming adapters plug in through usb. You need it to plug in with ethernet. It might be cheaper to have a professional come in and run a dedicated ethernet line. I had someone do that for me at my old house and I think it was $40. That's just as cheap as an adapter and you will probably have better bandwidth. If you're comfy doing a run yourself that would be the cheapest route. From monoprice.com you could buy a couple of wall plates for $1 and a 100 ft cable for $9.

I understand that, but this might be worth it. It's much cheaper for the wire and with the money you save you could buy a 10/100/1000 switch and still come out ahead. Then you don't have to worry abot losing signal, encryption, etc. Just my 2 cents.
