Hey i'm new here and i may be a little off topic but does anyone have any experience building a stand alone DVR, not a PC based system. What i'm after is a compact, portable unit that i can run off a 12v power supply and record video from a CCTV camera. I want at least PAL or NTSC, D1 quality resolution and i want to record in H264 file format. I really need something compact and duarble so i will need to record to an SD or CF card. My aim is to get 12-14hours of video onto a 16Gb card. I think this is do-able. I notice that there are some very cheap devices similar to this coming out of China now (an MPEG4 640x480 DVR for $67). I can't quite find what i need though and would like to build a custom unit - Can anyone help?

Can you link us to something similar to what you are talking about? I mean, you say there are devices similar coming out of China. I just want to get a good idea of what you are referring to. Because I don't know of anything like what you are describing.

I don't think you would be able to build anything that would compete on size or cost. Why not go with that one?
