I'm looking for a way to convert an old Power Mac G3 into a Linux-based slideshow viewer for viewing iPhoto albums shared over a network, and was hoping for some advice. Basically what I'd like it to do is:
- On startup, automatically launch something that lists available servers and lets the user browse their albums.
- When the user selects an album, it should show a slideshow.
- Install something like a Keyspan digital media remote and set it up to browse the albums, start and control the slideshow, and shut down the machine.
There's a Perl module for iPhoto's dpap protocol: It can get album names, list photos in an album, and get a photo's data. So all I need is to get the remote working, figure out how to build (or find an app that will do) the main menu, and write some scripts to link everything together. The problem is I don't know where to find the other pieces of the system. Any ideas would be most welcome. I plan to do this in Linux (probably Ubuntu/Debian or maybe Gentoo) since I haven't been able to find a decent slideshow app for Mac OS X that will run well on such an old machine.
Thanks!
MythTV has an image browser plugin with limited functionality. The plugin parses the image folders and allows the user to browse the pictures with a remote. It's not everything you are looking for, but it works out of the box...
