Anyone have experience with this?  Plextor ConvertX PX-M402U

Supposedly it can convert to Mpeg1 (VCD), Mpeg2 (DVD), or Mpeg4 (DivX AVI).

It's $124 w/ free shipping @ buy.com w/ $10 off coupon

Anyone have experience with this device?

Try reading some of the comments here:

http://www.videohelp.com/capturecards.php?CaptureCardRead=391#comments

I've heard other bad things about this card-- I would avoid it.

You might give this one a look (Canopus ADVC-100):

Good linkage steve =)

Just an obvious comment:  neither of those devices have tv tuners, so they are most likely NOT very (if at all) supported by PVR and HTPC software  applications.  They probably however, are great (or not, YMMV) at what they are intended for, converting analog or other source material "on the fly" for editing, burning to DVD, etc.

*shrug*

GB-PVR support this device, and allows you to use its hardware encoding to record directly to MPEG1/MPEG2/MSMPEG4/DivX.

There also other devices using the same chipset (GO7007SB) with tuner, but this is a good device (in concert with an IR blaster) if you want capture from a set top box.

I stand corrected (and it's right there in black and white on the front gbpvr page...)

Sub consistently surprises me with the features (mediamvp, pvr350 overlay support) he adds to gbpvr... I've got to take some time out and play with it. =)

In general I DO think it's easier/general to get a PVR card for doing pvr stuff, but I also see where it makes sense if you already have an encoding only card/box to utilize that, OR if you won't use the tuner i.e. in a satellite or digital cable scenario... (i.e. the receiver is doing the "tuning" on the outside)

So I was wrong... i admit it.

Got All Media (http://www.gottvpvr.com) is supposed to support it as well.

someone accidently bumped this thread (sometimes google lands people on a "reply" page)...

but it's interesting to note that there's now a plextor convertX WITH a tuner!

Also supported by gbpvr and with forthcoming support from sageTV (and presumably others)
