My name is Danny and I think my subject line says it all.  I have been reading this fourm for hours over the weekend.  Here is my rough draft of parts.  Any help that you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

I would not like to top $600 including all necessary construction supplies and shipping.

I need help figuring out things like sound and video.  Perhaps a mobo with onboard video and a cheap sound card?  I would like to use this as a jukebox as well.  I have a basic home theater in a box.  Nothing fancy.    I will be using this with a SDTV and would like to achieve  TV/DVD quality.  I do not have cable/sat, nor do I want it.  I also need networking.  Wireless would be nice but the HTPC will sit close enough to my dsl modem that a cat5 cable will not be a problem.  As for input I am looking into a firefly remote and a basic RF keyboard and mouse.  For the moment though I am going to go with a wired keyboard and mouse.   Can you control GBPVR or MCE via a mouse and keyboard?  I am open to using an IR remote untill I can get the firefly.  I need to save every dollar that I can.  Perhaps there are some bundled deals for some of this hardware/software?  To lower cost a bit I could go with XP home and GBPVR.  Noise is not a huge factor for me, but I would like to keep a decent level of silence.  The box will sit behind a door in my entertainment stand and I plan on cutting out the back to aid in air flow.  Speaking of airflow, I am concerned with system cooling.  The case I chose does not have a fan port in the front to draw cool air over the mobo.  However it does have a side fan port and of course the standard rear port.  Last but not least I need a PSU.  Oh and do you think that there might be a barebones or a compleate system out there that would save me money upfront but still allow me the level of upgradeability that I desire?

Thank you in advance for your time and help.

If you can save money by buying XP Pro or Home then that would be fine. (I like Pro.) Since you plan on using GBPVR, you don't need MediaCenter. Sometimes Tiger does some bundles (I usually get en email about every 3 days from them. There is a subscribe button somewhere on their webpage.) that will save you money, but you just have to keep your eyes open. What you have looks like a good start though.

As for sound and video... for sound I like the Auzentech cards. Here's a link to PCAlchemy:
High-end:
http://www.pcalchemy.com/product_info.php/pName/auzentech-hda-digital-xplosion-71-dts-connect-bgihdaxpd/cName/sound-cards
Regular:

Both have hardware encoding so that your sound is remastered on the fly. (For mp3's and other stereo sources.) They are a little more expensive, but sound is important to some people. If it's not as a big deal to you then try the onboard sound first. If it sounds good to you then great.

For video, you might want to shop around your motherboard a little more and find one with pci-express instead of AGP. Then you could get the nVidia 7300 from Gigabyte. It's fanless, cheap (~$70 I think) and HD compatible if you decide to upgrade later.

Miller gives you solid advice.
The AGP standard is on it's way out, considering PCIe X16 has 4 times the bandwidth, I would strongly urge you to consider PCIe architecture. Thats going to keep your investment viable for much longer in terms of upgradeability.

I completely agree with Miller's assessment of sound cards. I own the X-Mystique, and it rocks.

I would go higher with my processor also. You will definitely need one of those hardware encoding video cards if you go with a 2GHz processor. Windows MCE2005 requires a minimum processor speed of 1.6GHz with a hardware encoding video card. 3GHz for software encoding,

GBPVR has a large following around here, and because it's free, you should see if that meets your needs, that's a possible $100+ savings, so you have nothing to lose. The guy that wrote that software has given support through this forum before.

I use MCE and it meets my needs. It's really a matter of preference, so check out the free stuff first.

In terms of cooling/noise, the larger fans turn slower=less noise. The problem with these things is that when you silence the loudest fan(usually the stock CPU cooler) then you hear the video card fan. quiet that, and you hear the chip fan. following are the case fan/s.
Once I got to the chip fan, I decided that was good enough. I don't hear anything over the movie/music.

My first impression is that you could go with a 250 GB drive for about $15 more.

Onboard video will not work.  You need a TV-out jack that will only come with a stand alone Vid card.  That is unless you are planning an LCD monitor/tuner.

I also wanted to say that this is the best forum that I have ever seen when it comes to accepting new members and offering help without an attitude.  Thank you.
