When the picture is less than full screen, there is frequently a white band at the top of the picture. This band sometimes shows some lateral fluctuations. I am told this is something to do with closed captioning. Do all tuner cards have this problem? I have an inexpensive k-world PlusTV HD PCI 120 card. Do other cards such as Hauppauge cards have this band?

I'm not sure. I have a pvr500 and a hvr1600 and neither has the band you mention. I also do playback through a MediaMVP though. Is this band on LiveTV and/or recorded shows? Does the band show up on a computer monitor and/or just the tv? Does it show when you play back a video from another source?

The band shows up on both the monitor and the TV. When the picture fills the whole screen as in an HD broadcast, the band is not visible. It is also not visible sometimes when the station is transmitting a less than full screen image. More exactly, it appears with 4/3 pictures some of the time. I don't think there are many live broadcasts and around here, most are in HD. It will almost always appear with older movies and older TV shows plus some modern commercials.

Sounds like it's that extra space not taken by the video since the tv show you're watching and the tv you're watching on don't have the same ration of length to width. On most tvs I've seen it's black bars though, not white. Maybe that's a setting on your tv??

Sounds like this is not a common problem so I think it has to do with my tuner card. At some point, I want to replace the tuner card anyway (for other reasons) and I think that should fix the white band problem.

I think I've seen this problem at work, although I don't know the circumstances, so I can't provide any help. It just seems to occur on the first couple of lines or so of the active display area. It's annoying because the line isn't solid white, it's sort of a distortion of what should be displayed.
Thanks, 5-11under

Any chance you can do a print screen and attach it to a post, so that we can see what you are talking about?

Here is a vidcap of the screen. The problem is the dashed white line at the top. This line fluctuates and the dashed parts move around.

Ok, that IS what happens to me on some channels. Only two actually, OTA HD/digital FOX and CW. To fix it I just adjusted the Offset setting that are part of SageTV. I stretched the screen vertically a few pixels and then offset upwards a few more. I doesn't matter what tuner I use either. It's exactly the same using an HVR 1600, 1800 and AverTV PCIe Combo. I've heard of it being some sort of CC stream as well, but who knows.

Thanks, this means it is the software, not the tuner card. I will work on getting better software. The Arcsoft TotalMedia does not have much in the way of adjustments to the screen.
