I am trying out SageTV. (I was unable to get BeyondTV to work reliably on my system.)

SageTV seems to work well for recording, but I cannot figure out how to load the dvd burning plugin and get it to work properly. I am recording at Standard DVD quality.

I have tried using Nero Vision 7 and Nero Vision 8 to burn the recorded mpeg's off my hard drive. Even though I am recording at Standard DVD quality and have Nero set to Standard DVD settings, it still transcodes and takes almost as long as the original program to burn. Also SageTV Standard setting is 3.6 GB/hr which seems a lot more than the 4.38GB / 120 min dvd-r's.

Is there some DVD Authoring software that can burn the mpegs off my hard disk without transcoding ?

Is this being caused by Nero or is it that SageTV 's definition of Standard is not the same as a dvd-r ?

Is dvd burning of recorded programs any easier on GB-PVR ?

Any help is appreciated.

To be honest, I've never tried a plugin for burning a DVD. I usually use some stand-alone software for the few things I burn to DVD. Why not just archive them to a smaller file-size and save them on your hard drive?

Registered owner of Sagetv will work, don't know about the trial versions. If you want to do it right you could use Ulead Movie Factory is the easiest wasy to create DVD from TV recordings on your HD.

I do not watch anything on the pc monitor. I take the dvd-r over to my television set and put it into my set top dvd player.

Which stand-alone software do you use?

I had considered it, but found a lot of negative feedback on pcmagazine.com and amazon.com. Have you used Movie Factory a lot? Does it work well without crashing? Can a mpeg that is recorded at Standard Play quality be burned at Standard Play quality without transcoding?

Thanks for your help.

Tell me what you want to do?

1. Do you want to make a real DVD?
2. Do you want to make a MPEG1/2 fit on DVD so you could use the DVD has RAW-Video for playback only?
3. Do you want to make a real DVD with Menu an etc..?

If you want to do step 2 is easy, but you need a DVD player that supports playback of RAW MPEG1/2 playback without trans coding.

Otherwise DVD Movie Factory. To make DVD Movie Factory work well you need to disable Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware anything that would be running or using memory. Don't make the PC go into sleep mode or turn on the screen saver. Also leave that PC along to create DVD.

Other way you might have over look is connect the PC directly to a DVD Recorder like the type you use with the TV as like with DVR. They DVD Recorders are cheap they also have VHS to DVD Recorder dubbing. They would work better as you're burning the media right onto the DVD+-R or DVDRW. This is the way I do it from DCT 2000, DCT 6412, DCT 2500 or DCT 6416 model.  If you prefer doing this on the PC then use Movie Factory.

I've have pretty tried them all the those that are expensive seem to crash more. Nero never works right and crashes more. Nero is good for making Audio CD, or CD to MP3 or reverse.

Another way you could go it this... They now have Media Players that work like a DVD but are really HDD media. So all you have to do is copy all your MPEG1/2 to the HDD inside it comes with everything you need except the HDD. Max HDD is 750GB either IDE, Ultra 133, PATA 133 or SATA 150/300.  Cost is around $40 and up.  Looks like this...

Part2 video on youtube with sound

Note: Youtube vidoes are in another language.. But you get the idea.

This is another option for you. This would be great if you need to carry
your videos over to a friends house or when you travel you can bring
some movies or tv shows with you without lugging all those disc with you.

I wish to record television programs from my two Hauppauge WinTVPVR-250 tuners onto my hard drive at DVD Standard Play quality along with the Closed Captions normally transmitted at broadcast time.

Then I wish to take those mpeg files, using some software, and create DVD's using either DVD-R or DVD+R on my 16X DVD-R/W drive in my pc.  I wish to burn the dvd-r or dvd+r at Standard Play quality so that I do not have to transcode and so that I can place 2 Hrs of television onto each 4.7GB dvd-r or dvd+r along with the Closed Captions. I then want to take the dvd over to my television set and place it into my television set top dvd player and watch the program. If I have placed more than one program onto the dvd, I would like a menu in order to be able to choose which program to watch.

I will not be watching programs on the pc monitor. I must have the closed captions. I do not need subtitles. I do not need divx. I cannot get beyondtv to work right on my system. I have not yet tried gb-pvr. I have gotten sagetv to record with captions. I can get the programs onto a dvd, but they are larger than standard because sagetv "Standard Play" is 3 GB/Hr instead of the usual dvd standard play size. I can get Nero Vision to work, but it always transcodes and takes a very long time to generate a dvd.

I will try Ulead DVD Movie Factory as you recommended. If you or anyone else has any other suggestions, I would appreciate all recommendations. Thanks again.

GB-PVR recording at the "medium" setting creates SD video files that are approximately 2 GB per hour, but that's without closed captions -- I don't know how much that might add if any.  However, the third party plug-in for burning DVD's directly in GB-PVR is limited, and I'm not sure is capable of a true menu screen for multiple recordings per DVD.

A more expensive, but very easy to use program for editing and DVD creation is VideoRedo Suite ($80 US).  The menu pages aren't terribly impressive, but they get the job done in a straight forward manner, and editing out commercials or leading/trailing padding is simple (and doesn't require re-encoding of the file).

If I want to burn a DVD I too use ULead DVDMovieFactory. It works fine. It does take a little while to go through the menu creation and stuff like that. There might be some software out there that is more automated. Ie, would make the menus automatically based on your show titles, etc but to be honest I just don't burn many DVDs. (Doesn't it cost a lot to burn every show to a DVD?) So if you want to go that route I too like Ulead's products.

I have a suggestion though on something that might be easier. Get a DVD player that has a usb port. I have Philips DVP5982 that is a great upscaling DVD player. It also has the added bonus of having a usb port. That means anything I can copy onto a flashdrive I can watch on my dvd player. Amazon has them new for $65 and used for less than $40. You can probably get a 4GB flashdrive for under $10 these days. So it would cost a little initially, but you wouldn't have to keep buying blank DVDs, and more importantly, you wouldn't have to transcode anything and make menus. You just copy/paste onto the flash drive and plug it in.

I also use UleadDVD Movie Factory a lot and it's a very good piece of software for that. It seems that in your original post you were most concerned with the amount of time that it was taking to burn though.

It's going to take some time no matter how fast your PC. It's especially going to take time if you're adding menus to the disc. I think that a lot of people get hung up on this because they're still too used to burning CDs. Most drives have a vastly higher write speed for CD then they do for DVD and on top of that a CD holds a much smaller amount of data. So you take roughly 5.5 times the amount of data (with a 4.5gb DVD never mind if you're burning an 8gb DVD) and combine that with the fact that your burning that data at less then half the speed that you were burning when you were burning a CD and it's going to take a long time. Imagine how long it takes to burn a BlueRay Disc  Grin.

Midte hdd media player device can playback cc and you don't have to do transcoding as what you record can be transfer to the HDD to playback on TV. The DVD way you would have to make a lot of DVDs for each program you want to see. The Hauppauge Media MVP is a network media player you would connect that to the TV. I record with SAGETV on 3 PVR 150 MCE then playback the media on to the TV. I use to do it the way you have describe but that takes time. You could hook your  SAGETV recorder to your TV and ditch the Midte HDD media player idea.

If you want to take out commercials easy without the need to trans code the mpeg I use Womble MPEG-VCR..  This is example of using this program with SAGETV. Set the points to remove the clips and then save in real-time like saving a text file then your done.

I made this using SAGETV for recording and Womble MPEG-VCR. It only took less than 15 minutes to put together.
