This is all you need to start off a cheap pvr (or even Windows Home Server). Just add tuner and you've got a nice SD pvr. If you want HD then you might need to drop a ATI 5xxx card in there.

This sale made me think of you. That's $250 for a full computer. You can pay some more for Windows or load a linux build on there and be up and running. Find a used tuner from someone here or on Ebay and you're set.

1saleaday.com (similar to Woot) is "selling" 3 6ft HDMI cables for free today only. I didn't check, but their shipping is usually $5 which I would assume applies to today as well. Get them while their hot. Smiley

It looks like what you downloaded was some kind of DVR-MS conversion tool. This is not really what you needed. You just need to install codecs that can playback whatever type of file you are trying to play. The one that Miller mentioned above, ffdshow, is good as it has a number of codecs for quite a few different file types. If you need something that can take advantage of your specific video cards hardware acceleration you may want something else. What type of video card do you have?

I've been watching their sales and they also offer 2TB drives for $99 pretty regularly. Just make sure if it's an Advnaced Format Drive your system supports it.

Newegg has 1 TB drives for $59 right now. Pretty cheap if you're building a system. Enjoy.

Possibly, but I can't use the laptop. It's my work computer (Lenovo tablet) and has a miniscule HDD. I'll likely need to buy a desktop, quite likely need to buy a bigger HDD if it is an older cheap computer, and then figure out a tuner. Do you mean a box or a card (assuming card)? For my wife to go along with this, I will also need it to run as easy as (or nearly so) as our current VCR. (This is our only TV and I care more about my marriage than DVR Grin).
I'm assuming this means software purchases (unless I go Linux- which I have no experience with). It seems like a lot of "best case" purchases and assumptions that to me seem overly cheap. To me building a PVR is a means to an end more than a fun project. I love to tinker, but troubleshooting computers is not fun for me.   Blech!
I understand that. So you're saying you don't have any computer besides a work laptop. If that's the case then you might be better off going with a stand-alone product. But again, just my 2 cents, but once you're used to that Tivo feel that you can get from a computer as well it's hard to go back. I would say buy a cheap barebones kit (about $200) add a tuner and use that. Then when you're ready to add the 2nd tv you can move the computer to there and add a 360 for an extender. Or even better, turn the barebones into a HomeServer, stick it in a closet somewhere and but something like this for your media room.
